Overview of NIH grants

NIH funds both research and training, using funds allocated by Congress. NIH remains the largest single source of funds for cancer research, providing almost one third of all funds. Generally speaking, NIH is more willing than industry to fund long-term projects whose benefits may only become demonstrable after a number of years. The focus of industry, on the other hand, is usually directed to a speedier transferal of medical products or procedures to market.

NIH supports cancer research across a continuum of cancer and research types (e.g., diagnosis, survivorship). To appreciate the breadth of NIH's funding, visit the cancer site listings in NCI's Cancer Research Portfolio. Once there, click on the cancer of interest to you to view the number of projects that NIH is funding for that specific disease.

NCI allocates its grant funding across 40 different types of grant mechanisms under eight major categories. Most grant types are defined by applicant career stage or research context. For example, the "K" and "F" series of grants focuses on career development and training. They are geared towards clinical investigators at various stages of career advancement. On the other hand, the very common R01 and P01 grants fund different types of research contexts. The R01 grants underwrite discrete, specific research projects; whereas the P01 grants support large, broad-based research programs, each encompassing many projects united by a common research objective.

Each individual grant mechanism funds a number of different NIH programs. In turn, these programs encompass multiple studies. For a better understanding of this breakdown, visit NCI's Grant Mechanisms and Descriptions and view the different "Program Announcements" (PAs) listed under each grant mechanism.
